Reality and Metaphor
Reality Essay: Introduction
Reality is an illusion, and it is shaped through individuals’ five senses. Individuals explain psychical reality with these senses: seeing, smelling, hearing, touching, and tasting. Reality becomes a concept when individuals experience the reality. In addition, the reality is both intangible and tangible concept. According to the intangible concept of reality, individuals can not perceive reality in a complete way. Also, the reality is a changing concept. It changes with the individual’s ideas of the matter. In addition, individuals can reflect their own reality to other individuals because everyone has a different sense of reality. Moreover, individuals choose their own reality with outside concepts such as religions and morals.
Body Paragraphs
Buddhist religions suggest that our bodies, our minds, and the world are not real. According to Buddhism, the world is an illusion that everyone has to wake up from. In this sense, the human mind can perceive both intangible and tangible concepts. However, the human mind experiences tangible concepts with the five senses and perceives the intangible concept. If the reality is defined with experiencing tangible matters; then, intangible concepts are not real. However, the human mind tends to accept intangible concepts as real such as love, hate, desire, and anger. Eventually, humans see intangible concepts as real as well. Arguably, intangible concepts are not real because they lead humans to act, and human actions can be seen, smelled, heard, touched, or tasted. Therefore, human actions are real, but the emotions are not real. Reality is shaped by the idea of real.
Philosophers are trying to explain reality from their perspective. Nietzsche defines reality as an illusion. Plato is saying that the world is not real, but the idea of the world is real. Also, Plato defines reality as an intangible concept. In addition, Plato is saying “When the mind’s eye rests on objects illuminated by truth and reality, it understands and comprehends them, and functions intelligently; but when it turns to the twilight world of change and decay, it can only form opinions, its vision is confused and its beliefs shifting, and it seems to lack intelligence” (“Philosophy - Truth - Reality,” 2020 ). In other words, Plato suggests that reality is both real and unreal. In addition, George Berkeley suggests that individuals are creating the reality in their minds. The matters are real, while individuals imagine matters in their minds, and matters disappear when individuals stop imagining. Eventually, these suggestions are changing an individual’s perspective on reality. Philosophers lead individuals to think about reality, and reality provides different perspectives to define what is real.
There are various reasons to define reality as an intangible concept. One of them is religion. Humans are accepting God as a real individual. However, God cannot be seen. In addition, heaven and hell are intangible concepts, but humans are accepting them as real places that upon death, they go either to heaven or hell. Individuals are creating a reality for these concepts. Their perspective allows these concepts to be real.
The duality, in reality, creates the illusion because humans are accepting both tangible and intangible concepts. Arguably, intangible concepts are not real. In addition, tangible concepts may not be real too. Reality can be perceived differently for each individual. In other words, an artist creates his artworks to act so that he creates his own reality. Artworks are real, but the stories in artworks are not always real. Most of the artworks are fictional. Therefore, one can argue that art is also changing reality. Art criticizes reality from different perspectives. Artists are creating an illusion of reality. In addition, fictional reality theory says that individuals are creating artificial reality as long as they are logical. In other words, fictional characters can create their own universe to become real to individuals. According to the fictional reality theory, superman is also real. Individuals who have a perspective or an idea about reality are lynching reality concepts through their perspective. Individuals are deciding which concepts are real or not. Some of the individuals are lynching reality; some of them choose not the lynch. According to the different perspective, the reality is both certain and uncertain concept for individuals.
On the other hand, a metaphor is a speech figure that describes an object or an action in a way that is not literally true. Humans have been using metaphors for centuries. However, metaphors are intangible concepts. Humans are using metaphors to describe unreal facts. Metaphors are opposite concepts with reality. Artists have also been using metaphors in their artworks for centuries. These metaphors are demolishing reality. The human mind accepts the reality in metaphors because metaphors are telling ideas and characters, so the human mind can acknowledge metaphors as real concepts. Therefore, the human mind perceives metaphors as a connecting bridge between ideas and definitions. Metaphors are not suitable for the nature of reality. In addition, allegory is a similar concept to metaphor. However, allegory is the way to show an idea with materials. Arguably artists who use allegory instead of metaphor are more successful. Allegories are more realistic than metaphors. In this sense, metaphors are more superficial than allegories. Metaphors are representing abstract concepts to define characters. After all, metaphors are lynching reality.
Usually, individuals are using metaphors to define concepts such as good and bad. However, good and bad are abstract concepts. In this sense, the reality of good and bad only exist an individual’s mind, and these concepts have different meanings in individuals. According to a different perspective of individuals, the reality is not certain for these concepts. The uncertainty about abstract concepts allows reality to lynch metaphors.
Metaphors become useless when individuals have a different kind of perspectives or different culture, and they are not always understandable. Individuals should know the literal meaning of metaphors to understand. In addition, the human mind can easily create new metaphors for scenes, but it is not necessary. Also, the human mind chooses a long way when it uses metaphors. Arguably metaphors are unnecessary to tell a similarity for concepts that can be told directly. In other words, metaphors do not make the conversations more beautiful, and they merely make conversations more complex.
In the 21st century, metaphors are not popular in society. Arguably they are seen unnecessary, and individuals seem to stop using metaphors. They tell direct what they want to say. However, sometimes an artist uses metaphors in their artworks such as poems. In addition, mainstream cinema is using metaphors to tell or demolish ideas. However, allegory is more common in the art. Artist seems to demolish the metaphor usage for their artworks. Artist is lynching both reality and metaphors. In the 21st century, individuals have complex ideas about reality and metaphors. Individuals are more open to new ideas or concepts.
There are multiple realities and metaphors for individuals. Individuals have more options to define reality in the 21st century. Individuals are free to choose their own reality. Common ideas are not valid anymore. Also, art criticizes these common ideas in society to change an individual’s minds. Reality is a subjective concept, and individuals allow to create different realities. In addition, metaphors are seen as an old school concept due to the modern world in which individuals demolish metaphor usage a lot.
Reality Essay: Conclusion
To sum up, the reality is an uncertain concept. In the 21st century, individuals have different opinions about reality. However, individuals are choosing religion or morals to decide their own reality. Some religions say that abstract concepts are real. Other religions infer that reality is an illusion. In the 21st century, individuals are demolishing concepts like reality and metaphor. Therefore, a group of people believes that, for example, superman is real according to their perspective. Also, philosophers and artists are criticizing reality through their perspective. However, the most common idea is that individuals are lynching concepts like reality and metaphor. In this sense, reality and metaphor tend to transform into subjective concepts. Reality is both abstract and tangible concepts, but metaphors are not real. The common ideas about these concepts can easily be manipulated and changed through art. That is, an artist creates a different reality in his artwork. Artists use more allegories than metaphors. However, metaphors are not suitable for the nature of reality. Similarly, reality may not be suitable for human nature because individuals are creating different realities through their perspective, and after all, these multiple realities create illusions.
