Another argument of the nature theory is that genetic factors can influence the environment in which we live. For example, genetic factors that influence aggression and impulsivity can lead to more conflict in social situations, which in turn can shape the environment and further reinforce aggressive behavior (Belsky & Beaver, 2011). Additionally, individuals with certain genetic predispositions may be more likely to seek out specific environments that are more compatible with their genetic makeup.

The Complex Interplay Between Genetics and Environment

While the nature versus nurture debate has traditionally focused on the relative importance of genetics versus environment, it is increasingly recognized that the two are deeply intertwined. Research has shown that genes can be influenced by environmental factors, and environmental factors can shape gene expression (Meaney, 2010). For example, the stress response system can be shaped by early life experiences, such as maternal care, which can influence gene expression and ultimately impact mental health (McGowan et al., 2009). Similarly, environmental factors can impact epigenetic marks, which can lead to changes in gene expression without altering the underlying DNA sequence (Liu et al., 2018).

In conclusion, the nature versus nurture debate has been ongoing for many years, with scholars often arguing for the superiority of one factor over the other.
